Seven Headset Shootout!

I performed a shootout between 6 different headset units (updated 1-16-06) in a combination Quiet, Windy and Noisy test all using the BlackBerry 8700.  The test set up was identical for both tests.  I have included sound sample so you can create your own matrix and judgments as to which headset sounds best.  Of course, when it came time to pick a winner I did take other factors into consideration.  After all, a shoe box size headset might sound best but who would want to wear one?

The sound sample results follow below:

Quiet Test Samples:

Plantronics D640

Plantronics V510

Plantronics M3000

nXZEN Plus 5500

Sony Ericsson HBH610

Flamingo

Custom AX2

Noisy Test Samples:

Plantronics D640

Plantronics V510

Plantronics M3000

nXZEN Plus 5500

Sony Ericsson HBH610

Flamingo

Custom AX2         Standard AX2 included for Comparison

WIND Tests:

Custom AX2

Custom AX2 with home made Wind Sock

AX2 unmodified

Plantronics D640

Plantronics V510

Flamingo

Conclusion:

On the basis of this sound test and the sound I heard on my end I would rank the headsets as follows:

1. Custom AX2

2. Plantronics D640

3. Plantronics V510

4. Plantronics M3000

5. Flamingo

6. Sony Ericsson HBH 610

7. nXZEN

When comfort, ease of use and other factors are taken into account, the M3000 and SE HBH610 drop out completely.  When cost and sound to the user are factored in, the nXZEN drops out leaving me with the Custom AX2, D640, and V510 as my top three headsets.  Of course, you need to make your own judgments as they relate to your needs.  When you throw wind noise conditions the Custom AX2 is only beat by theBoom, a wired headset.  If you add a windsock to the Custom AX2 it gets close to theBoom.
